I still remember the first time I opened Jane Goodall’s In the Shadow of Man as a teenager. Reading about her life among the chimpanzees—their playfulness, intelligence, and deep kinship with us humans—was like entering a hidden world. That book was my introduction not just to her research, but to the courage and devotion it takes to live one’s vision so fully. Since then, Jane Goodall has remained one of my most cherished heroes, a reminder of what it means to serve both science and humanity with heart.

A Moment of Peace in Turbulence

Years later, I had the privilege of sitting with Jane Goodall the day after September 11, 2001. A small group of us gathered with her in a gallery on 72nd Street in New York City, having just come from a one-world environmental conference at the Omega Institute. The city was shrouded in grief, fear, and shock.Yet, in the half hour or so that we spent with Jane, the atmosphere shifted. She carried peace and tranquility into the room like a quiet current, steady and grounding. Her presence reminded us that while the world outside had erupted in violence and chaos, there was another way to meet reality—with calm, grace, and compassion. She embodied the possibility of responding rather than reacting, of holding dignity when everything else felt broken.

The Numerology of Six

Jane Goodall was born on April 3, 1934, a date that reduces to a Life Path of Six. In numerology, Six is the number of the caretaker, the nurturer, and the guardian of life.
